Very few are thinking about GPA, study habits, or time management.
But why would they when no one has shown them how different high school is.
Middle school often rewards students who can remember information, finish homework, and do well on quizzes without much effort. As a result, many students don't know how to study

Freshman year feels like a fresh start, so many students assume they have plenty of time. What they don’t realize is that ninth-grade GPA becomes the foundation for every year that follows. Recovering from a rough freshman year can be almost impossible. Avoiding one is much easier.
2. Trying to do everything.
Students sign up for every club, every leadership opportunity, every event, and every advanced class.
- Being involved is great. Being overwhelmed isn’t.
- The goal is consistency, not exhaustion.
3. Waiting too long to ask for help.
One confusing lesson turns into two. One missing assignment becomes several. One bad test becomes a bad grading period. Students who learn to ask questions early almost always recover faster.
4. Pursuing rigorous courses without study/organizational skills
Students have no formal system of organization or prioritization. They are so used to winging it and succeeding
“Instead of asking, "How many honors classes should my child take?" Try asking, Does my child have a study routine? Do they know how to prepare for different types of tests? Can they manage their time without me reminding them every day? Do they know what to do when they fall behind?”
What You Can Do Before School Starts
This week, sit down with your student for 30 minutes.
Talk about:
✔️ How they'll organize assignments.
✔️ Where they'll study each evening.
✔️ What they'll do if they earn a low grade.
✔️ Which activities they're excited about and how much time those commitments require.
✔️ Who they'll ask for help when school gets hard.
